1948年5月17日，晋冀鲁豫军区部队经过72天的争夺，在这一天攻克晋南重镇临汾，晋冀鲁豫与晋绥两个解放区联成一片。敌人孤立据点临汾的解放，为进军晋中消灭山西阎锡山部主力创造了有利条件。6月11日至7月21日，这个兵团及地方武装进行了晋中战役，以少胜多，连续歼敌十万余人，解放了除太原以外的晋中地区。
On May 17, 1948, the Battle of Linfen ended.
On May 17, 1948, after 72 days of fighting, the troops of the Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan Military Region captured the key town of Linfen in southern Shanxi. As such, the two liberated areas of Shanxi-Hebei-Shandong-Henan and Shanxi-Suiyuan could exchange resources with each other.
The liberation of Linfen, the Kuomintang's isolated stronghold, created favorable conditions for the march into the middle part of Shanxi to destroy Yan Xishan’s main force.
From June 11 to July 21, this regiment and the local armed forces carried out the Jinzhong Campaign. They managed to defeat more than 100,000 people in succession despite that they have fewer people than the other side. As such, the middle part of Shanxi apart from Taiyuan got liberated.
