解放军战士冲过苏州河，向上海市区攻击。 1949年5月12日，解放军发动以消灭汤恩伯主力、解放大上海为目的的“上海战役”。
自4月下旬解放军发动渡江战役以来，已歼灭了汤恩伯的大部分有生力量，其剩下的25个师约20万人退守淞沪地区，企图凭借永久工事，继续抵抗。为了解放上海，解放军第三野战军分别从浦东、浦西迫近吴淞口，阻敌退路。解放军在作了充分准备之后，发动上海战役。
On May 12, 1949, the PLA launched the Shanghai Campaign.
The soldiers of the People's Liberation Army rushed across the Suzhou River and attacked the city of Shanghai. On May 12, 1949, the PLA launched the "Shanghai Campaign" aimed at eliminating Tang Enbo's main force and liberating Shanghai.
Since the PLA launched the campaign to cross the Yangtze River in late April, most of Tang Enbo's effective forces have been wiped out, and the remaining 25 divisions of about 200,000 men have retreated to the Songhu area in an attempt to continue their resistance with permanent fortifications.
In order to liberate Shanghai, the Third Field Army of the People's Liberation Army approached Wusongkou from Pudong and Puxi respectively to block the enemy's retreat. After making full preparations, the People's Liberation Army launched the Shanghai Campaign.
